So basically, you have a 9-year-old who's sent to a new school, by herself, and is expected to find the way from the dock she arrives at to the school, which is not in the immediate area. Lucy drove me nuts by hitting virtually every cliche in the book (clumsy but cute! Unknowledgeable but determined! Manages to learn an improbable amount of things very quickly even *with* secret help! Believes the best and is nice to everyone!), but so did every other character. I'm not going to touch on the obnoxious main characters. LET ME EXPOUND ON ALL THE PROBLEMS THIS BOOK HAS, AND IT HAS A LOT. Pretend I gave it 3 or 4 stars for that age group.īut I'm not a preteen and it's a ridiculous plot-hole-filled mess. Hollow Fields is available from GoManga as both three separate volumes and an omnibus collection.NOTE: for anyone under the age of 12, this is probably fine. Rosca for creating and illustrating such an entertaining story. Other drag on in endless volumes and pretty soon your shelf is full of multiple volumes where, sincerely, there is not much plot advancement. So many original American manga is left unfinished by creators or publishers that sometimes I hesitate to buy the first volume because I never know if it will continue. Another thing I love about this series is that it starts and finishes in less than ten volumes.

Of course, I get a kick out of having such a strong female character being in charge and bossing people around. Her design is fabulous and her personality is perfect for a mad scientist school principal: impatient, cruel and ingenious. It’s also a nice twist to the school manga stoylines: a school for mad scientist! How can you pass that up? Rosca was what attracted me to this manga.

Just what is Miss Weaver working on? What happens to the students who go to detention? Will Lucy survive the school year? This is the way it’s been for years, until Lucy Snow arrives and one “lucky” child escapes from the Windmill. All is fun and games until Friday comes, when the lowest achieving student is sent to detention in the mysterious Windmill. The kids take classes like grave robbing, anatomy experiments and killer robot construction. The school is run by Miss Weaver and her mechanical engineers. In this world the children of mad scientists are sent to a special school, called Hollow Fields, to study the art of becoming a great evil mad scientist.
